| Ann Bonny
from Cork, Ireland, pirate at the beginning of the 18th century, was the mistress of captain John Rackham, alias Calico Jack. During a sea battle they
destroyed a Duch ship. They took some of the Duch sailors aboard to replace their
own killed pirates. Among them was Mary
Read, a young black haired woman from England who, for obvious reasons, made the journey in men's clothes. The two women became the best of friends overnight and for some years they were feared among sailors and became famous as the new plague. But fame seldom lasts even for pirates. They ran into an ambush from the British Navy and all pirates of John Rakham were hung.
Mary and Ann escaped from this fate because they were both pregnant at that time. They were imprisoned and Mary would never see the free world again. She died in childbirth, a few months after the execution of Calico Jack.
She gave birth to a daughter, Elisa Ann however did get free but her baby died in birth. Ann joined the crew of captain Roodbaard and later married Joshua Davis. Together they raised the baby of Mary Read, Elisa. More information about Ann Bonny can be found in the book A general history of the robberies & murders of the most notorious pirates, by captain Charles Johnson. Published in 1724 in London. The book is since long out of print and original copies are rare and very expensive |
