Since medieval times we know there are four elements. Earth, air, fire and water. But in reality there is one more element to deal with.  Call it love or beauty or a perfect supreme being. The name is Minaï Lekatariba-Lamina-Tchaï Ekbat de Sebat. Leeloo for short. These five elements combined can overcome anything, can protect the universe, can save the earth. This knowledge is guarded by the Mondoshawan. 
Somewhere in the years 2200 unimaginable evil is on its way to earth. The main purpose, to destroy one of the five elements and gain unstoppable power. 
The Mondoshawan take the fifth element to earth but their ship is attacked by Mangalore assassins and it crashes on Earth. The perfect supreme being is killed. Only a hand is later retrieved from the debris of the space ship. From the DNA of that hand Leeloo is recreated. When she awakes she finds herself imprisoned in a medical machine but she frees herself. She then, with the help of a taxi driver, must find the other four elements and unite them in order to stop the evil that threatens Earth.
