Omon

<<<  Index  >>>

Omon is better known by her Azuma ninja name Ayame
When Omon was a little girl her home town, Kyoto, was burnt down and in ruins because of the armies fighting for the possession of the city. She sat at the riverbank watching the dead bodies, perhaps realizing her parent were among them when she was found by the ninja Master Shiunsai who eventually took her with him and made a female ninja, a kunoichi from her. Her ninja name should be Ayame. Omon was very talented and when she was 14 she could compete with the best of the ninja. Many villains and dark ninjas have crossed her path and most of them did not the light of the next day.
One day in her travels she came across the ruins of a small burnt down fortified shinobi ninja village on the border of Hagakura. She made her way to the center of the town, taking down all  attackers one by one at the blink of an eye. She came too late however. Everybody was dead or dying in the streets and burning houses. Everybody but one. A young boyish female ninja suddenly attacked her, thinking Ayame was one of the murderers. The name of the young ninja, who in one hour had lost everybody she knew, was Rin.

The first Tenchu game, Stealth Assassins, was one of the first, or perhaps the very first real stealth game for consoles, in this case the PlayStation. That first game was even for that time on that generation console not the greatest game to look at. See the scan in the top row. Comparable games often had better graphics but the gameplay was stunning. You could actually sneak up on your enemy and take him by surprise. And you could use everything you could see in the three dimensional world to hide. Walking on roofs was as easy as walking through the streets. You could of course use brutal force and jump on your enemies slashing with your swords but even if you survived with these tactics you couldn't get high scores.  If you did the job by ninja rules, getting closer and closer, feeling the tension in your heart, waiting and waiting even longer for the right moment and then at the perfect moment slightly pushing the X-button, Ayame then suddenly game into action, getting even a bit closer, then jumping on the poor man's shoulders, head between her strong upper legs and then in one move with her sharp sword severing the head from the neck. The guard a few feet away wouldn't even notice.
In that first game
Ayame wears a rather dull traditional outfit. When on the item select screen pressing left, left, down, down, square, square, triange, circle on the NTSC version or square, square, triangle, triangle, right, right, up, right on the PAL version, you could change that traditional outfit in a very sexy but acceptable and not too out of place modern outfit. I can't find any screenshots from this but one of these days I try one with a camera straight from the TV screen and put it here.
In later games she had a less traditional outfit from the start.
