First performed 18 September 1980, Santa Monica, California

26 September 1980, Santa Monica, California, Rundown Studios, rehearsals. Released on The Bootleg Series Volume 13, disc 4 track 3

I tell people you're just goin' through changes

And that you're acquainted both with night and day

That your money's good and you're just being courageous

On them burnin' bridges knowin' your feet are made of clay

Well I say you won't be destroyed by your inventions

That you brought it all under captivity

And that you really do have all the best intentions

But you're makin' a liar out of me

Well I say that you're just young and self-tormented

But that deep down you understand

The hopes and fears and dreams of the discontented

Who threaten now to overtake your promised land

Well, I say you'd not sow discord among brothers

Nor drain a man of his integrity

But you'll remember the cries of orphans and their mothers

But you're makin' a liar out of me

Well you're makin' a liar out of me

Well I say that, that ain't flesh and blood you're drinkin'

In the wounded empire of your fool's paradise

With a light above your head forever blinkin'

Turnin' virgins into merchandise

That you must have been beautiful when you were livin'

You remind me of some old-time used-to-be

I say you can be trusted with the power you been given

But you're makin' a liar out of me

So many things so hard to say as you stumble

To take refuge in your offices of shame

As the earth beneath my feet begins to rumble

And your young men die for nothin' not even fame

I say that someday you'll begin to trust us

And that your conscience not been slain by conformity

That you'll stand up unafraid to believe in justice

But you're makin' a liar out of me

You're makin' a liar out of me

Well I can hear the sound of distant thunder

From an open window at the end of every hall

Now that you're gone I got to wonder

If you ever were here at all

I say you never sacrificed my children

To some false god of infidelity

And that it's not the Tower of Babel that you're buildin'

But you're makin' a liar out of me

You're makin' a liar out of me

Now you're makin' a liar out of me

The Groom's Still Waiting At The Altar (Bob Dylan)

First performed 18 September 1980, Santa Monica, California

Early May 1981, Los Angeles, California, 14th Shot Of Love recording session. Released on Shot Of Love

Prayed in the ghetto with my face in the cement

Heard the last moan of a boxer, seen the massacre of the innocent

Felt around for the light switch, felt around for her face

Been treated like a farm animal on a wild goose chase

West of the Jordan, east of the Rock of Gibraltar

I see the turning of the page, curtain risin' on a new age

See the groom still waitin' at the altar

Try to be pure at heart, they arrest you for robbery

Mistake your shyness for aloofness, your shyness for snobbery

Got the message this morning, the one that was sent to me

About the madness of becomin' what one was never meant to be

West of the Jordan, east of the Rock of Gibraltar

I see the turning of the page, curtain risin' on a new age

See the groom still waitin' at the altar

Don't know what I can say about Claudette wouldn't come back to haunt me

Finally had to give her up 'bout the time she began to want me

But I know God has mercy on them who are slandered and humiliated

I'd have done anything for that woman if she don't make me feel so obligated

West of the Jordan, east of the Rock of Gibraltar

I see the turning of the page, curtain risin' on a new age

See the groom still waitin' at the altar

Put your hand on my head, baby, do I have a temperature?

I see people who are supposed to know better standin' around like furniture

There's a wall between you, what you want and you got to leap it

Tonight you got the power to take it, tomorrow you won't have the power to keep it

West of the Jordan, east of the Rock of Gibraltar

I see the turning of the page, curtain risin' on a new age

See the groom still waitin' at the altar

Cities on fire, phones out of order

They're killing nuns and soldiers, there's fighting on the border

What can I say about Claudette, ain't seen her since January

She could be respectably married or running a whorehouse in Buenos Aires

West of the Jordan, east of the Rock of Gibraltar

I see the turning of the page, curtain risin' on a new age

Prayin' in the ghetto, with my face in the cement

I heard the last moan of a boxer, and the massacre of the innocent

I faced [???], became nauseated

Just me and an overworked dancer, the walls that are really deteriorated

I go set my affections on things above, let nothing stand in the way of love, not even the Rock of Gibraltar!

If you see her on Planet Street, tell her I still think she's neat

And that the groom's still waiting at the altar

Highwaymen on murder charges, pushing', [her into] robbery

Mistaking your shyness for aloofness, your silence for snobbery

I never did get the message, I don't even know when one was sent to me

About the madness of becoming what one was never meant to be

Well, (I go set my affections on things above, let nothing stand in the way of that love) not even the Rock of Gibraltar

If you see her on Planet Street, tell I still think he's neat

And that the groom's still waiting at the altar

I finally had to give her up, about the time she began to want me

[???], slandered and humiliated

I'd have done anything for that woman, if she'd only made me feel obligated

Well, I set my affections on things above, (???) not even the Rock of Gibraltar

Well, if you see her on Planet Street, tell her I still think she's neat

And that the groom's still waiting at the altar

Well I'm locked into a time-zone, with a high-degree temperature

The world's coming to an end, wise men standing around like furniture

What I can say about Claudette, [her world] can't believe in

She was running a whore house in Buenos Aires, or [leading another female]

Well, I go set my affections on things above, let nothing stand in the way of that love, not even the Rock of Gibraltar!

If you see her on Planet Street, tell her that still think she's neat

And that the groom's still waiting at the altar

Well there's a wall between you and what you want and you got to [leap] it

Tonight she gets the power to take it, come on you won't have the power to keep it

What can I say about Claudette, she can be in the mountains or the prairies

She can be respectably married or running a whore house in Buenos Aires

Well, (???) not even the Rock of Gibraltar!

Yonder Comes Sin (Bob Dylan)

First performed 18 September 1980, Santa Monica, California

You wanna talk to me, you got many things to say

You want the spirit to be speaking through but your lust for comfort get in the way

I can read it in your eyes, oh, what your heart will not reveal

And that old evil burden has been draggin' you down

Bound to grind you beneath the wheel

Yonder comes sin (Walkin' like a man, talkin' like an angel)

Yonder comes sin (Proud like a peacock, swift like an eagle)

Look at your feet, see where they've been to

Look at your hands, see what they been into

Can't you take it on the chin

Yonder comes sin

You see this woman standin' next to me, she's foreign to your sight

Well, hеr eyes may be a diffеrent colour than mine but her blood is red and her bones are white

You've been seeking them eternal, spiritual things but your fifty-dollar smile confirms

You're still tryin' to buy your way into the dreams of them

Whose bodies will be food for worms

Yonder comes sin (Ready and steady, willing and able)

Yonder comes sin (Standin' on the chair, standin' on the table)

Look at your feet, see where they've been to

Look at your hands, see what they've been into

Can't you take it on the chin

Yonder comes sin

I say, See them six wild horses, honey, you say I don't even see one

You say, Point them out to me, love, I say, Honey I got to run

My brother's blood is crying from the grave but you can't hear the voice

I stand in jeopardy every hour

Wonderin' what reason you have to rejoice

Yonder comes sin (Down on your knees, down into the ditches)

Yonder comes sin (Vomiting up jewels, vomiting up riches)

Look at your feet see where they've been to

Look at your hands, see what they've been into

Enough to put you to tail-spin

Yonder comes sin, oh, right

Jeremiah preached repentance

To those that would turn from hell

But the critics all gave him such bad reviews

Put him down at the bottom of a well

Kept on talking anyway

As the people were put into chains

Wasn't nobody there to say "Bon voyage"

Or shatter any bottles of champagne

Yonder comes sin (Cracking that whip, just like a feather)

Sin (Put a knife in your back while talking about the weather)

Look at your feet see where they've been to

Look at your hands, see what they've been into

Can you take it on the chin

Yonder comes sin

Every Grain Of Sand (Bob Dylan)

First performed 18 September 1980, Santa Monica, California

Early May 1981, Los Angeles, California, 14th Shot Of Love recording session. Released on Shot Of Love

In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need

When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed

There's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere

Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair

Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake

Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break

In the fury of the moment, I can see the Master's hand

In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand

Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear

Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer

Now the sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way

To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay

I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame

And every time I pass that way I always hear my name

Then onward in my journey I come to understand

That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand

I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night

In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light

In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space

In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face

I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea

Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me

I am hanging in the balance of the reality of men

Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand

18 September 1980, Santa Monica, California, Rundown Studios, rehearsals

23 September 1980, Santa Monica, California, Rundown Studios, rehearsals. Released on The Bootleg Series Volume 13, disc 4 track 10

She was from Haiti, fair brown and intense, I don't think she ever known about innocence

I was playing a show in Miami, in the theater of mystery

Told about Jesus, told about the rain

She told me about division, told me about the pain

That had risen from the ashes and abided in her memory

Was she a virtuous woman, I really can't say, something about her said, Trust me anyway

As days turned to minutes and the minutes turned back into hours

I pretended to be sleepin' and he thought I was

But I was only paying attention like a rattle snake does

When he's hearing footsteps trampling on the flowers

The Caribbean wind still blows from Mexico to Curaçao

From Chinatown to the furnace of desire

And them distant ships of liberty on the iron waves so bold and free

Bringing everyone that's near to me closer to the fire

Well our shadows drew closer till they touched on the floor, prodigal son's waiting close to the door

Preaching obscenities, waiting for the night to arrive

He was well connected, but her heart was a snare she had left him to die in there

But I knew I could get out while he still was alive

Well the stars on my balcony, flies buzz my head, ceiling fan's broken, there's heath in my bed

Street band playin' Nearer my God to thee

She looked into my eyes, I heard the mission bells ring, she said, I know what you're thinking, but there ain't a thing

You can do about it, so you might as well let it be

And the Caribbean wind still blows from Mexico down to Curaçao

From Chinatown to the furnace of desire

And them distant ships of liberty on them iron waves so bold and free

Bringing everything and everyone close to me, closer to the fire

Atlantic City by the cruel sea, I hear a voice cryin', Daddy, I always think it's for me

But it's only the silence in the buttermilk hills that calls

Every new messenger, bringing evil reports about armies that are rioting, whose fuses are short

And them earthly gargoyles and hate words written on walls

Would I have married her, I don't know I suppose, she had bells in her braids and fire in her clothes

But the curtain was rising, like they say, the show must go on

And I felt to come over me, some kind of glow, I's gonna say, Come on with me, I got plenty of room

But I knew I'd be lyin', and besides she had already gone

And that Caribbean wind still blows from Curaçao to Mexico

From Chinatown to the furnace of desire

And them distant ships of liberty on iron waves so bold and free

Bringing everything that's near to me nearer to the fire

Is she a child or a woman, I really can't say, something about her said, Trust me anyway

As days turned to minutes and the minutes turned back into hours

What if I'm used, playin' as a pawn

It certainly was possible as the gay night wore on

But victory was mine, and I held it with the help of God's power

The curtain was rising and, like they say, the ship will sail at dawn

And I felt it come over me, some kind of gloom, I's gonna say, Come on with me girl, I got plenty of room

But I know I'd be lyin', and besides she had already gone

And that Caribbean wind still howls from Tokyo to the British Isles

[Bringing everything] to that furnace of desire

And them distant ships of liberty on them iron waves so bold and free

Bringing everything that's near to me nearer to the fire

She was well rehearsed, fair brown and blonde

She had friends who was busboys and friends in the Pentagon

Playing a show in Miami in the theater of divine comedy

Talked in the shadows where they talked in the rain

I could tell she was still feelin’ the pain

Pain of rejection, pain of infidelity.

Was she a child or a woman, I can’t say which

One to another she could to easily switch

Couples were dancin’ an’ I lost track of the hours

He was well prepared, I knew he was

Paying attention like a rattlesnake does

When he’s hearin’ footsteps tramplin’ over his flowers

And them Caribbean winds still blow from Nassau to Mexico

From the circle of ice to the furnace of desire

And them distant ships of liberty on them iron waves so bold and free

Bringing everything that’s near to me nearer to the fire

She looked into my soul through the clothes that I wore

She said, We got a mutual friend standin’ at the door

And you know he’s got our best interest in mind

He was well-connected but her heart was a snare

And she had left him to die in there

He had two payments due and he was a little behind

Well I slept in a hotel where flies buzz my head

Ceiling fan was broken, there was heat in my bed

Street band playing, Nearer my God to Thee

We met in secret where we drank from a spring

She said, I know what you’re thinking, but there ain’t a thing

we can do about it, so we might as well let it be

The Caribbean winds still blow from Nassau to Mexico

From the circle of ice to the furnace of desire

And them distant ships of liberty on them iron waves so bold and free

Bringing everything that’s near to me nearer to the fire

Atlantic City, two years to the day

I hear her voice cryin’, Daddy, and I looked that way

But it’s only the silence in the buttermilk hills that calls

Every new messenger bringing evil report

’Bout rioting’ armies and time that is short

An’ earthquakes and train wrecks and hate words scribbled on walls

Would I have married her, I don’t know, I suppose

She had bells in her braids and they hung to her toes

But I heard my mirrored destiny said to be movin’ on

And I felt it come over me, some kind of gloom

Gonna say, Come on with me girl, I got plenty of room

But I knew I'd be lying and besides she had already gone

And then Caribbean winds still blow from Nassau to Mexico

The circle of ice to the furnace of desire

And them distant ships of liberty on them iron waves so bold and free

She was the rose of Sharon from paradise lost

From the city of seven hills near the place of the cross

I was playing a show in Miami in the theater of divine comedy

Told about Jesus, told about the rain

She told me about the jungle where her brothers were slain

By the man who invented iron and disappeared so mysteriously

Was she a child or an angel, did we go too far

Were we sniped the bait, did we follow a star

through a hole in the wall to where the long arm of the law cannot reach

Could I've been used and played as a pawn

It certainly was possible as the gay night wore on

Where men bathed in perfume and practiced the hoax of free speech

And them Caribbean winds still blow from Nassau to Mexico

Fanning the flames in the furnace of desire

And them distant ships of liberty on them iron waves so bold and free

Bringing everything that's near to me nearer to the fire

Sea breeze blowin’, there’s a hellhound loose

Redeemed men who have escaped from the noose

Preaching faith and salvation, waitin’ on the night to arrive

He was well connected, but her heart was a snare

And she had left him to die in there

He was goin’ down slow, just barely stayin’ alive

The cry of the peacock, flies buzz in my head

Ceiling fan broken, there’s a heat in my bed

Street band playing, Nearer My God to Thee

We met at the station where the mission bells ring

She said, I know what you’re thinking, but there ain’t a thing

you can do about it, so let us just agree to agree

Well, it ain't that I'm wiser, I've just spent more time with my back to the wall

And I've got a couple more years on you babe, and that's all

Now I'm tired of runnin' while you're only learning to crawl

You're heading somewhere, I've been somewhere and found that it's nowhere at all

And I've picked up a couple more years on you babe, and that's all

Well saying goodbye, don't never come easy at all

But you've gotta fly because you heard those young voices call

Someday when you're older you'll smile at a man strong and tall

All I know it's growing' strong

'T was in the spring, springtime became summer

How would've I know you'd come along

Hands, touching hands

Reachin' out, touching me, touching you

Sweet Caroline, good times never seemed so good

I'm inclined to believe they never would

Look at the night, the night don't seem so lonely

We fill it up with only two

And when I hurt, hurtin' runs off my shoulders

How can I hurt when holdin' you

Warm, touchin' warm

Reachin' out, touchin' me, touchin' you

First performed 19 September 1980, Santa Monica, California

26 September 1980, Santa Monica, California, Rundown Studios, rehearsals. Released on The Bootleg Series Volume 16 disc 1

Let's keep it between us, folks meddlin' in our affairs, they're not our friends

Let's keep it between us before the whole thing breaks down and comes to an end

They'll tell you one thing, tell me and me another, till we don't know who to trust

Oh, darlin', let's keep it between us

Let's keep it between us, we've been through too much together that they never shared

They've had nothing to say to us before, now all of a sudden it's as if they've always cared

All we need is honesty, a little humility and trust

Oh, darlin', can we keep it between us

Let's keep it between us, before it all breaks down and goes too far

If we can't settle it by ourselves, we must be worse off than we think we are

Backseat drivers don't know the feel of the wheel, but they sure know how to make a fuss

Oh, darlin', can we keep it between us

I know we're not perfect, then again, so what

There ain't no reason to treat me like a slave, treat you like a slut

And it's just making me angry

Can we lay back for a moment before we wake up and find ourselves in a game we both have lost

Well these instant cures and easy answers, something tells me we can't afford the cost

There are some thing not fit for human ears, some things don't need to be discussed

Ah, darlin', can we keep it between us, can we keep it between us

Too much happiness just makes the hair rise on their heads

They talked about us both behind our backs, so loud I could hear every word the said

Well, in this kind of company we fall, let's just move to the back of the buss

Oh, darlin', can we keep it between us

Well I know we're not perfect, but then again, so what

That ain't no reason to treat me like a slave, and I treat you like a slut

And it just making me angry

We'll lay back for a while for the whole thing breaks down and goes to fast

If we can't settle it by ourselves, honey we must be worse off than we think we are

In this kind of company we gonna fall, let's just move to the back, to the back of the buss

Ah, darlin', can we keep it between us, can we keep it between us

Been away, haven't seen you in a while

How've you been, have you changed your style

What do you think that we've grown up differently

Don't seem the same, seems like you've lost your feel for me

So let's leave it alone, 'cause we don't see eye to eye

There ain't no good guy, there ain't no bad guy

There's only you and me and we just disagree

I'm goin' back to a place that's far away

How about you, have you got a place to stay

Why should I care when I'm just trying to get along

We were friends and now it's the end of our love song

Everybody likes a celebration, happy music and conversation

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have the blues

In the corner there's a couple dancing, from the kitchen I can hear them laughing

Oh, I wish I was celebrating too

I know this night won't last forever, I know the [sun] is gonna shine sometime

I need some hope for a bright tomorrow to show this heart is gonna mend just fine

So pardon me my disposition, wish I didn't have to sit and listen

They're playing the same old song on the radio

She's been lying since the day I met her, I be better off to just forget her

Oh, I, I wish that I was more than lonesome and blue

I know this night won't last forever, I knew the [sun] is gonna shine sometime

I need some hope for a bright tomorrow to show this heart is gonna mend just fine

Well, it’s always been my nature to take chances

My right-hand drawing back while my left hand advances

Where the current is strong and the monkey dances

To the tune of a concertina

Blood dryin’ in my yellow hair as I go from shore to shore

I know what it is that has drawn me to your door

But I don't know what it is makes you think you’ve seen me before

Angelina

Oh, Angelina, oh, Angelina

Her eyes were two slits that would make any snake proud

With a face that any painter would paint and she was well endowed

Praising the dead as he rode a donkey through the crowd

Or was it a hyena

Do I need your permission to turn my other cheek

If you can read my thoughts then why must I speak

No, I have heard nothing about the man that you seek

Angelina

Oh, Angelina, oh, Angelina

In the valley of the giants where the stars and stripes explode

The peaches they were sweet and the milk and honey flowed

I was only following instructions when the judge sent me down the road

With your subpoena

The peaceful exchange of ideas for you was always to tame

Inter travel warfare was always more your style and your gain

Your best friend an my best enemy is one and the same

Angeline

Oh, Angelina, oh, Angelina

There’s a black Mercedes rolling through the combat zone

Your servants are half dead, you’re down to the bone

Tell me, tall men, where would you like to be overthrown

In Jerusalem or Argentina

She was stolen from her mother when she was three days old

Now her vengeance has been satisfied and her strength [cards] are showing gold

He’s surrounded by God’s angels and she’s wearing’ a blindfold

And so are you, Angelina

Oh, Angelina, oh, Angelina

I see pieces of men marching; trying to take heaven by force

I can see the unknown rider, I can see the pale white horse

In God’s truth name tell me what you want and you’ll have it of course

Just step into the arena

Beat a path of retreat up them spiral staircases

Pass the tree of smoke, pass the angel with four faces

Begging God for mercy and weeping’ and moaning in unholy places

Angelina

Oh, Angelina, oh, Angelina

Go ahead, drive the nails through my hand, laugh at me where you stand

Go ahead, say it isn't me, but the day will come that you will see

'Cause I'll rise again, ain't no power on Earth can tie me down

Yes, I'll rise again, death can't keep me buried in the ground

(Go ahead and mock my name, you will see, I'm still the same)

(Go ahead, try to bury me, very, very soon I will be free)

'Cause I'll rise again, ain't no power on Earth can tie me now

And I'll rise again, death can't keep me buried in the ground

Go ahead, say I'm dead and gone, you will see that you were wrong

Go ahead, try to hide the Son, but the day will come when you'll see I'm the one

'Cause I'll rise again, ain't no power on Earth can tie me down

Yes, I'll rise again, death can't keep me buried in the ground

Go ahead, say it isn't me, but the day will come that you will see

'Cause I'll rise again, ain't no power on Earth can tie me down

Yes, I'll rise again, death can't keep me buried in the ground

(Go ahead and mock my name, you will see, I'm still the same)

(Go ahead, come on and mock my name, I look still the same)                                                29 Nov 1980, Seattle

Mary From The Wild Moor (Traditional)

First performed 16 October 1980, Santa Monica, California

16 October 1980, Santa Monica, California, Rundown Studios, rehearsals. Released on The Bootleg Series Volume 16 disc 1

'T was on one cold and wintry night when the wind blew across the wild moor

'T was there Mary wandered along with her child, till she came to her own father's door

Oh, why did I leave this fair spot, where once I was happy and free

For now I'm alone in this cold world to roam and nobody cares for me

Oh, father, [show] pity on me, come down and open the door

For the child in my arms, he will perish and die, from the wind that blew across the wild moor

But the old man was deaf to her cries, not a sound of her voice did he hear

And the watch dogs did howl and the village bells toiled and the wind blew across the wild moor

Oh, how the old man must have felt when he came to the door the next morn

And he found Mary dead but the child still alive, still wrapped in the dead mother's arms

In grief the old man pined away and the child to its mother went soon

And no one, they say, has been there till this day and the cottage to ruin has gone

But the villagers point out the spot where the willow droops over the door

Saying there Mary died, once a gay village bride from the winds that blew across the wild moor

There is a city of gold

Far from this rat-race, eats at your soul

Far from the confusion, with the bars that hold

There is a city of gold

There is a country of light

Raised up in glory, the angels wearing white

Never know darkness, never know night

I was listening to the voices of death on parade

In Grand Central Station where the anonymous phone calls are made

Working for a system I didn't understand or trust

Suffering ridicule at every turn and wanting to give in disgust

But you changed my life, came along in a time of strife

In hunger and need you made my heart bleed

You changed my life, you changed my life

Talk about salvation, people suddenly get tired

They got a million things to do, they're all so inspired

I was practicing free choice and the freedom of speech

But that pearly gate price was just a little bit out of reach

But you changed my life, came along in a time of strife

Under the gun, clouds blocking the sun

You changed my life, you changed my life

Well the nature of man is to beg and to steal

I do it myself, it's not so unreal

The call of the wild is forever at my door

Want me to fly like an eagle while being chained to the floor

But you changed my life, came along in a time of strife

But silver and gold, as a man we cannot hold

You changed my life, you changed my life

When I was eatin' with the pigs off a fancy tray

I say, you're looking good, I was told to have a nice day

It all seemed so proper, and so elite

Eatin' that obsolete garbage while being so discreet

But you changed my life, came along in a time of strife

You opened the doors, I came in on all fours

You changed my life, you changed my life

There's someone in my body that I could hardly see

Invading my privacy making my decisions for me

Holding me back, not letting me stand

Making me feel like a stranger in a strange land

But you changed my life, came along in a time of strife

You came down the line, give me a new mind

You changed my life, you changed my life

You changed my life, you changed my life

And I just wanna tell you, you changed my life

And I just wanna tell you, you changed my life

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

Don't need a shot of heroin to kill my disease

Don't need a shot of turpentine, only bring me to my knees

Don't need a shot of codeine to help me to repent

Don't need a shot of whiskey, help me be president

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

Doctor, can you hear me, I need some Medicaid

I seen the kingdoms of the world and it's makin' me feel afraid

What I got ain't painful, it's just bound to kill me dead

Like the men that followed Jesus when they put a price upon His head

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

I don't need no alibi when I'm spending time with you

I've heard all of them rumors and you have heard them too

Don't show me no picture show or give me no book to read

It don't satisfy the hurt inside nor the habit that it feeds

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

Why would I want to take your life?

You've only murdered my father, raped his wife

Tattooed my babies with a poisoned pen

Mocked my God, humiliated my friends

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

Don't wanna be with nobody tonight

Veronica not here, Mavis just ain't right

There's a man that hates me and he's swift, smooth and near

Am I supposed to set back and wait until he's here?

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

What makes the wind wanna blow tonight?

Don't even feel like crossing the street and my car ain't actin' right

Called home, everybody seemed to have moved away

My conscience is beginning to bother me today

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

If you're a doctor, I need a shot of love

Why would I want to take your life

You've only murdered my father, raped his wife

Tattooed my babies with a poisoned pen

Mocked my God, humiliated my friends

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love

Don't wanna be with nobody tonight

Need A Woman (Bob Dylan)

First performed 20 March 1981, Santa Monica, California

20 March 1981, Santa Monica, California, Rundown Studios. Preliminary Shot Of Love recording session. Released on The Bootleg Series Volume 16 disc 1

It’s been raining in my mouth all day, dripping down to my clothes

My patience it is wearing thin, I’ve got fire inside my toes

Searching for the truth the way God has designed it

Well, the real truth is that I may be afraid to find it

Well I need a woman, all right, oh, I need a woman, oh, I don’t feel right

See me as I am, to show me the kind of love that don't have to be condemned

And I want you to be that woman

I’ve had my eyes on you baby for five long years

you probably don’t know me at all, but I have seen your laughter and I’ve seen your tears

You don’t frighten me, I’m not so demanding

You look like it wouldn’t hurt you none to have a man of understanding

Well I need a woman, oh so much, I need a woman, drinking from the same cup

Seen you standing on the corner, seen you sitting down in the park

I've seen you standing in the sunshine, I've seen you sleeping in the dark.

And I want you to be that woman, yes I do, be that woman

Well, if you keep hearing some things long enough, you just begin naturally believe it’s true

You know, there’s a wall that can’t fall and there’s a wall you can walk right through

Oh well, all that which is not permanent can’t last

Can’t place your hopes in the future if you got to avoid the past

And I need that woman to be my queen

I need that woman, black, white, yellow, brown, blue or green

Somebody who likes simple things, is not afraid to bend

Somebody who don’t make herself up just to be seen by other men

And I want you to be that woman, yes I do, be that woman

I got some unanswered questions in my mind that’s taking place

I wanna put the searchlight aflame on you, wanna explore your face.

The rebellion in me now, why was it created

To blur the focus of my eyes and keep me isolated.

Well, I need a woman, ain’t no crime, need a woman, all the time

Get back, the falseness, get back, the world

I know a virtuous woman is hard to find, but they can’t be obsolete

Well, I want you to be that woman, yes I do, be that woman, yes I do

Be that woman, yes I do

27 April 1981, Los Angeles, California, Clover Recorders. Shot Of Love recording session # 9. Released on The Bootleg Series Volume 3

Lately I've been having evil dreams, I wake up in a cold blue glare

I run the tape back in my mind, wondering' if I took the wrong road somewhere

Searching for the truth the way God designed it

Well, the real truth is that I may be afraid to find it

Well I need a woman, all right, need a woman, every night

To be with me and know me as I am, to show me the kind of love that don't have to be condemned

And I want you to be that woman, yes, I do

I've had my eyes on you baby for five long years, well, you probably don't know me at all

But I have seen your laughter and I've seen your tears.

A tell-tale heart will show itself to anybody near

There's always some new stranger in the night to lend a sympathetic ear.

Well I need a woman to be my own, need a woman that's mine alone

Seen you in the doorway, I seen your in the park, seen you in the sunshine, I seen you in the dark.

And I want you to be that woman (Oh oh oh,  Be that woman every way)

You keep listening to something long enough, you just bound to believe that it's true

You know there's some things that you put up, it's gonna come back on you

That which is not permanent don't last, whatever's waiting in the future

could be what you're running from in the past

I need a woman, ah pull up, need a woman, drinking from the same cup

Someone who likes simple things, is not afraid to bend

Someone who don't make herself up o make every man her friend

And I want you to be that woman (every day, be that woman every way)

Don't know what you got that I want, don't know what I got to give

Don't know how much time I've got, don't know how long I live

The rebellion in my soul, why was it created

To blur the focus of my mind and keep me isolated

But I need a woman, ain't no crime, need a woman, all the time

To see the promised land with me as the time goes by

To rule my heart with sweetness and boldness from on high

And I want you to be that woman, yes I do, be that woman straight and true

Oh, when the love was lost, how did we ever survive?

Through that dark and lonely midnight, tell me how did I stay alive?

Oh, I'll try to last 'til morning, my new found friend, let's begin

Let's begin, there's so much to discover, let's begin

We got to learn about each other and in the end

we may find that we are lovers, you know, you got to play to win, let's begin

What the future has in store, well, it's time to realize

First performed 31 March 1981, Los Angeles, California

24 April 1981, Los Angeles, California, Clover Recorders. The 8th Shot Of Love recording session, released on The Bootleg Series Volume 13, disc 4 track 14

Uttering idle words from a reprobate mind

Clinging to strange promises, dying on the vine

Never being' able to separate the good from the bad

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, it's makin' me feel so sad

Dead man, dead man, when will you arise, cobwebs in your mind, dust upon your eyes

There's a child you knew only was to know you just could not be expressed

Now it hurts me to see what you accept as good and one time you wouldn't have settled for less than that

The race of the engine, that overrules your heart

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, pretending that you're so smart

Dead man, dead man, when will you arise, cobwebs in your mind, dust upon your eyes

The glamour and the bright lights and the politics of sin

The ghetto that you built for me is the one you're living in

The silver spade that waits for you to throw dirt upon your tomb

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, you're running out of room

Dead man, dead man, when will you arise, cobwebs in your mind, dust upon your eyes

What are you tryin' to overpower me with, a doctrine or the gun

My back's already to the wall, where can I run

The tuxedo that you're wearin', the flower in your lapel

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, you wanna taking me down to hell

Dead man, dead man, when will you arise, cobwebs in your mind, dust upon your eyes

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it

You killed his body someplace else and dumped it in a long black limousine

They arrested him for breaking and entering into a place he's never seen

The prettiest girl that they could find that made you look like a bit of queen

Ohh, I can't sand it, I can't stand it, the way that make it look so clean

Dead man, dead man, when will you arise, cobwebs in your mind, dust upon your eyes

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it

Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it, ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it

First performed 31 March 1981, Los Angeles, California

1 April 1981, Los Angeles, California, Cream Studio. 4th Shot Of Love recording session, released on The Bootleg Series Volume 16

I tried so hard, my dear, to show that you're my every dream

But you're afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme

A memory from your lonesome past leads us so far apart

Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart

You'll never know how much it hurts to see you sad and cry

You know you need and want my love, yet you're afraid to try

Why do you run and hide from life, to try it just ain't smart

Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart

Another love before my time has made your heart sad and blue

And so my heart is paying now for things I didn't do

In anger, unkind words are said that make the teardrops start

Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart

There was a time that I believed that you belonged to me

But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory

The more I learn to care for you, the more we drift apart

Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart

Sunshine, blue skies, please go away, my girl has found another and gone away

With her went my future, my life is filled with gloom, day after day I stay locked up in my room

I know to you it might sound strange, but I wish it would rain

So badly I wanna go outside, everyone knows that a man ain't supposed to cry

I gotta cry 'cause crying eases the pain, for this hurt I feel inside

Words could never explain, I just wish it would rain

Day in day out my tear-stained face pressed against the windowpane

My eyes search the skies desperately for rain

Raindrops 'll hide my teardrops and no one will ever know

That I'm crying, crying when I go outside

To the world outside my tears

I refuse to explain, I just wish it would rain

[----------------------] [hope] I will again

When the wind blows, when the wind blows far away

[I will wait] [waiting for you]

[One day's she loves me, one day she's blue]

[But I wait you], [???] way down below

And the weather, [down below]

[???] just a little more time

[???] we're living on borrowed time

When the wind blows, just a little up ahead

And the [Morten] shows [living] out of my head

I can't tell you, just a little [high fine]

[And that we're living] on borrowed time

So I woke up, found you heart behind a seal

And the rodeo behind your drivin' wheel

[Writing a letter] [???] to that in mine

For about to tell you on borrowed time

For to tell you that you borrow time

Will it, will it combine, operators talking all the time

And it [???] in it so many to climb

[All operators] on borrowed time]

[??? operators] on borrowed time

Hold in a minute over the hill

[When she's be with me / left me], she living there still

Just I got to rolling, rolling down the line

What can I tell you, we're on borrowed time, what can I tell you, we're on borrowed time

What can I tell you, we're on borrowed time, what can I tell you, we're on borrowed time

On the radio or the color TV

And you worship, throw away your dignity

[Just like] a letter, that I wish I could write

What can I tell you, we're on borrowed time, what can I tell you, we're on borrowed time

In The Summertime (Bob Dylan)

First performed 1 April 1981, Los Angeles, California

14 May 1981, Los Angeles, California, Clover Recorders. 15th Shot Of Love recording session. Released on Shot Of Love

I was in your presence for an hour or so, or was it a day? I truly don't know

Where the sun never set, where the trees hung low by that soft and shining sea

Did you respect me for what I did or for what I didn't do, or for keeping it hid

Did I lose my mind when I tried to get rid of everything you see

In the summertime, aha, in the summertime

In the summertime when you were with me

I got the heart and you got the blood, we cut through iron and we cut through mud

Then came the warnin' that was before the flood that set everybody free

Fools they made a mock of sin, our loyalty they tried to win

But you were closer to me than my next of kin when they didn't want to know or see

In the summertime, aha in the summertime

In the summertime when you were with me

Strangers, they meddled in our affairs, poverty and shame was theirs

But all that sufferin' was not to be compared with the glory that is to be

And I'm still carrying the gift you gave, it's a part of me now, it's been cherished and saved

It'll be with me unto the grave and then unto eternity

In the summertime, aha in the summertime

In the summertime when you were with me

Ain't got not girlfriend, got no place to go

She was here yesterday, but she gone today

Even took my fur slippers away

Oh, ain't got no fur slippers now, where did she go, where could she be

Maybe to a movie show, maybe she's watching TV

She was here yesterday, that's all I can say

All that I know she took my fur slippers away

Oh, ain't got no fur slippers now, oh, ain't got no fur slippers now

I cannot go outside, the ground is too hard

Where can I go, can't even go in my backyard

Can't drive my car nowhere, I don't wanna get in, too

I sure do miss them fur slippers as much as I miss you

Oh, ain't got no fur slippers now, oh, ain't got no fur slippers now

14 May 1981, Los Angeles, California, Clover Recorders. 15th Shot Of Love recording session. Released on Shot Of Love

Trouble in the city, trouble in the farm

You got your rabbit's foot, you got your good-luck charm

But they can't help you none when there's trouble

Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, nothin' but trouble

Trouble in the water, trouble in the air

Go all the way to the other side of the world, you'll find trouble there

Revolution [???] no solution for trouble

Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, nothin' but trouble

Drought and starvation, packaging of the soul

Persecution, execution, governments out of control

You can see the writing on the wall inviting trouble

Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, nothin' but trouble

Put your ear to the train tracks, put your ear to the ground

You ever feel like you're never alone even when there's nobody else around

Since the beginning of the universe man's been cursed by trouble

Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, nothin' but trouble

Nightclubs of the broken-hearted, stadiums of the damned

Legislature, perverted nature, doors that are rudely slammed

Look into infinity, all you see is trouble

Yeah, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, nothin' but trouble

Trouble, yeah, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, nothin' but trouble

Don't ever take yourself away, I will never leave you, will never deceive you

I'll be right there walkin' behind you

Dearest, I think you're the one, I can't imagine anybody doin' more to me than you do

15 May 1981, Los Angeles, California, Clover Recorders. 16th Shot Of Love recording session #7, released on Shot Of Love

Heart of mine be still, you can play with fire but you'll get the bill

Don't let her know, don't let her know that you love her

Don't be a fool, don't be blind, heart of mine

Heart of mine go back home, you got no reason to wander, no reason to roam

Don't let her see, don't let her see that you need her

Don't put yourself over the line, heart of mine

Heart of mine go back where you been, be only trouble for you if you let her in

Don't let her hear, don't let her hear where you're going

Don't untie the ties that bind, heart of mine

Heart of mine so malicious and so full of guile, give you an inch and you'll take a mile

Don't let yourself fall, don't let yourself stumble

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime, heart of mine

Property Of Jesus (Bob Dylan)

First performed 28 April 1981, Los Angeles, California

1 May 1981, Los Angeles, California, Clover Recorders. 13th Shot Of Love recording session. Released on Shot Of Love

Go ahead and talk about him because he makes you doubt

Because he has denied himself the things that you can't live without

Laugh at him behind his back just like the others do

Remind him of what he used to be when he comes walkin' through

But he's the property of Jesus, resent him to the bone

You got something better, you've got a heart of stone

Stop your conversation when he passes on the street

Hope he falls upon himself, oh, won't that be sweet

Because he can't be exploited by superstition anymore

Because he can't be bribed or bought by the things that you adore

He's the property of Jesus, resent him to the bone

You got something better, you've got a heart of stone

When the whip that's a-keeping you in line doesn't make him jump

Say he's hard-of-hearin', say that he's a chump

Say he's out of step with reality as you try to test his nerve

Because he doesn't pay tribute to that king that you serve

He's the property of Jesus, resent him to the bone

You got something better, you've got a heart of stone

Say that he's a loser 'cause he got no common sense

Because he don't increase his worth at someone else's expense

Because he's not afraid of trying, say he's got no style

'Cause he doesn't tell you jokes or fairy tales, say he's failed to make you smile

But he's the property of Jesus, resent him to the bone

You got something better, you've got a heart of stone

You can laugh at salvation, you can play Olympic games

You think that when you rest at last you'll go back from where you came

But you've picked up quite a story and you've changed since the womb

What happened to the real you, you've been captured but by whom?

He's the property of Jesus, resent him to the bone

You got something better, you've got a heart of stone

He's the property of Jesus, resent him to the bone

You got something better, you've got a heart of stone

Lenny Bruce (Bob Dylan)

First performed 29 April 1981, Los Angeles, California

14 May 1981, Los Angeles, California, Clover Recorders. 15th Shot Of Love recording session. Released on Shot Of Love

Lenny Bruce is dead but his ghost lives on and on

Never did get any Golden Globe award, never made it to Synanon

He was an outlaw, that's for sure, more of an outlaw than you ever were

Lenny Bruce is gone but his spirit's livin' on and on

Maybe he had some problems, maybe some things that he couldn't work out

But he sure was funny and he sure told the truth and he knew what he was talkin' about

Never robbed any churches nor cut off any babies' heads

He just took the folks in high places and he shined a light in their beds

He's on some other shore, he didn't wanna live anymore

Lenny Bruce is dead but he didn't commit any crime

He just had the insight to rip off the lid before its time

I rode with him in a taxi once, only for a mile and a half

Seemed like it took a couple of months

Lenny Bruce moved on and the ones that killed him are gone

They said that he was sick because he didn't play by the rules

He just showed the wise men of his day to be nothing more than fools

They stamped him and they labeled him like they do with pants and shirts

He fought a war on a battlefield where every victory hurts

Lenny Bruce was bad, he was the brother that you never had

But these things your heart will rise above

Once in a while he won't call, but it's all in the game

Soon he'll be there by your side with a sweet bouquet

And he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips

And your heart will fly away

Once in a while he won't call, but it's all in the game

Soon he'll be there by your side with a sweet, bouquet

And he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips

And your heart will fly away

And your heart will fly away

There's a thief on the cross, his chances are slim

There's a thief on the cross, I wanna talk to him

Well everybody's been diverted, everybody's looking the other way

Everybody's attention is divided, well they may not afford to wait

There's a thief on the cross, his chances are slim

There's a thief on the cross, I wanna talk to him

Wanna ask him 'bout his mother, wanna ask about his [ways]

Wanna ask him 'bout to talk to himself if it's time it didn't go too well

Well, there's a thief on the cross, his chances are slim

There's a thief on the cross, I wanna talk to him

Well, everybody's not too excited, don't be too surprised

Head for the town and you can see it well and it's rising in his eyes

Well, there's a thief on the cross ah, his chances are slim

There's a thief on the cross I wanna talk to him

There's a thief on the cross, there's a thief on the cross

Now there's winning, ruling and readin', everybody goes sinning by the rules

There's a secret to excite you whether Iran or Mexico

Oh, there's a thief on the cross ah, his chances are slim

There's a thief on the cross, I wanna talk to him

There's a thief on the cross, thief on the cross

There's a thief on the cross, there's a thief on the cross

There's a thief on the cross

Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call

Wanted to sail upon your waters since I 've been three feet tall

You've seen it all, you've seen it all

[Away from where I rode there], went from sails to steam

In your belly, there are treasures that few have ever seen

Most of them dream, most of them dream

Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred years too late

The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder, I'm an over-forty victim of fate

Arriving too late, arriving too late

I have been drunk now for over two weeks

Passed out and rallied and I sprung a few leaks

I got to [stop] wishin', I got to go fishin', I'm down to rock bottom again

Just a few friends, just a few friends

I go for younger women, lived with several a while

And though they ran off, every day, they still could manage to smile

Just takes a while, just takes a while

Mother, mother ocean, [???] years that I've found

My occupational hazard being my occupation's just can 't be found

Feel like I've drowned, gonna [???] found

Feel like I've drowned, gonna head for town
